Visiting the Islands
Comoros consists of four Islands as could be seen from the Map on the left of the page. The biggest Island is known as Ngazidja, in the Local dialect. It is also called Grande Comore in French. The Capital of Grande Comore and Comoros Island is Moroni.
The second largest Island is Ndzouani, also known as Anjouan. The Capital of Anjouan is Mitsamoudou.
The third is Mayotte, which still under French rule up to the present day. The capital is called Dzaoudzi.
The fourth and smallest is Mouhelli. Mouhelli took it's independence along with the other two Islands (Ngazidja and Anjouan). Together they are all now known as Union of Comoros.
After the Comorian
franc (set rate: 1 euro = 492 Comorian francs), the euro is the second currency
used in Comoros. Changing them is not necessary, as you will be given Comorian
francs in exchange for your euros.
Credit cards: Except for one or two hotels, credit cards are not accepted.
However, you can withdraw cash at the Banque Internationale du Commerce des
Comores (BIC, place de France, near the General Post Office), which is a subsidiary
company of the BNP-Paribas. You will thus depend on the opening hours (Monday
to Thursday: 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Friday: 7:30 to 11 a.m.).
In an emergency, some hotels and shops will accept French cheques. But you are advised to always dea
Electronic devices
Electrical devices, plugs and power points are similar to European norms: 220 volts, 50 hz. Plugs and switches only have 2 wiring with the "Earth" wire missing. Therefore, you are advised to bring an adaptor if your devices are 3-wired. Be warned, electricity is very unreliable as there are power-cuts daily for over a long period of time. It is therefore advised to bring a supply of batteries, torches and portable solar panels as there is plenty of sunshine.
Water is drinkable, but it is advisable to drink bottled water only (available in all shops).
Dressing
Summer clothing is recommended all year along.
Swimsuits and transparent or provocative clothes are frowned upon in towns and villages.
It is not suitable for women to walk on beaches with just a bikini.
Bathing shoes are recommended because of coral.
If you consider climbing the Karthala, bring warm, weatherproof clothing as well as walking boots.
In relation to Great Britain, the time is brought forward by two hours.
The official religion is Islam (99 % of Comorian muslims are moderate and tolerant).
Language
The
national language is Comorian, a dialect derived from Swahili and Arabic.
The official language is French and Arabic.
English is spoken by a minority.

Fishing
This area of the Indian Ocean has plenty of fish. The most common varieties include marlin, sailfish, yellowfin tuna, dolphin, giant trevally, jewfish, barracuda, and lots of tropical fish.
Along the coast, offshore or upon the exceptional site of the Vailheu Bank, we suggest to you various forms of fishing with the assistance of our Comorian skippers/fishermen :
- Traditional big- game fishing
- Sportfishing
- Longline fishing
You
can also stray from the beaten track by initiating yourself into traditional
Comorian fishing :
- Trolling
- Bottom fishing, using stones as sinkers
- Night fishing
- Handlining
- Live bait fishing
Half
and full-day trips - Two anglers at most
Non-anglers welcome
Gathering coral and some shellfish, hunting and catching birds, endemic reptiles or makis is prohibited, as all these species are protected.
Be aware of sharks and other dangerous marine life!
Please Respect the beautiful nature and its inhabitants.
Vaccinations
Preventive
measures against malaria are recommended.
No compulsory vaccinations, but always take precautions. For more information
